Bought an Old Home and Bathroom Has a Lot of Mold? How to Remove the Mold

If you purchased an old home to fix up and have found a lot of mold in the bathroom, you need to take steps to remove the mold. Mold spores can get into the air, and you can breathe them in. This is especially harmful if you or anyone else in your family has respiratory problems. Fortunately, there are many ways you can get the mold out, two of which are listed below.

Things You Can Do

If you have mold on the floor or walls, you can make a cleaner out of two parts water mixed with one part bleach. Place the solution into a spray bottle and spray the mold areas generously. Let the bleach mixture sit on the mold for about 15 to 20 minutes to give it time to kill the spores. You will notice some of the spores will disappear completely. If you still see mold, you can use a brush with coarse bristles. When you are finished, thoroughly rinse the area, and wipe it down to remove the bleach solution.

If you do not want to use bleach, you can choose baking soda or white vinegar. Both of these things will also kill mold spores to allow you to clean the mold from the surface. If you choose baking soda, you need to make a paste. To do this, pour baking soda into a bowl and pour enough water until it makes a thick paste. Wipe the paste on the molded areas and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes, then scrub away. Vinegar can be used in the same way as bleach by mixing it with water and putting it into a spray bottle.

Hire a Professional

If you have a lot of mold or are seeing mold in areas that are hard to clean, such as behind wall tiles, under flooring tiles, and more, you should contact a professional mold removal company. They can find more mold if you have it to ensure all of it is removed.

When the company arrives, they will close up the bathroom while they are working. This may include using plastic sheeting or a tarp to cover the doorway if there is not a door. They have mold spore solutions that are stronger than regular ones. They may have to remove flooring or wall coverings if there is mold there.

The mold removal company sprays the entire room with a whitewash that is made to kill all mold spores. Everything will be covered with the whitewash including flooring, walls, and ceilings. This whitewash will be left in place for a few hours in many cases. After this, the mold removal company will clean the whitewash from the bathroom and investigate to ensure all the mold is gone.

There are many things you can do to prevent mold growth in the future, such as providing the bathroom with ventilation by installing a fan, not hanging wet towels in the bathroom, and more.
